Newcomer Champion Awards Now Being Accepted

KINGSTON – Nominations for the Newcomer Champion Awards are now being accepted, announced MPP John Gerretsen.

Established in 2007, the Newcomer Champion Awards recognize outstanding individuals or groups who contribute to the understanding and sharing of Ontario’s cultural diversity and provide welcoming communities for the benefit of newcomers.

“The newcomer awards truly seek to recognize the cultural diversity and leadership within our community,” said Gerretsen. “This is the second year that these nominations are being accepted and I strongly encourage residents within our cultural communities to apply.”

Any resident of Ontario may submit a nomination. Nominees may be individuals or groups who have demonstrated leadership and commitment in promoting cultural diversity and harmony through activities such as educational outreach, special events and the support of newcomers settling into communities across the province.

Eligible activities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Programs implemented to help settle and connect newcomers in communities.
  • Outreach efforts to promote cross-cultural understanding.
  • Events celebrating cultural diversity in Ontario.

Nomination forms are more information are available on the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration website at http://www.citizenship.gov.on.ca and click on the Honours and Awards, or by phone at 416-314-7526. The nomination deadline is March 14th, 2008.
